What a Markdown table looks like

A Markdown table is plain text: a header row, a row of dashes that marks where the header ends, then one line per row, with a | between columns. GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian and many other apps show it as a formatted table, and it stays readable as text everywhere else. Writing one by hand is fiddly once a table has more than a few rows, and pasting spreadsheet data straight into Markdown gives you tabs instead of columns.

It is also a tidy way to include a table in a prompt or a knowledge file for ChatGPT or Claude. Each value sits under its labeled column in plain text, so the table is easy to check, edit and share.

What the generator handles

The delimiter is detected for you: tabs for cells copied from a spreadsheet, commas or semicolons for CSV files (semicolons are common in Europe, where the comma is the decimal mark), and pipes for an existing Markdown table. CSV quoting is supported, so a quoted value can contain commas, quotes written as "" and line breaks. Windows and Unix line breaks both work, and emoji, accented letters and Chinese, Japanese or Korean text come through unchanged.

How do I convert Excel or Google Sheets to a Markdown table?

Select the cells in Excel or Google Sheets, copy them, and paste them into the box on this page. Spreadsheets copy cells as tab-separated text, which is detected automatically, so the Markdown table appears straight away. Cells that contain line breaks or quotes come through intact. There is nothing to install and no account.

How do I put a pipe character inside a Markdown table cell?

Write it as \| with a backslash in front, because a bare | starts a new column. This tool does that for you: every | in your data is written as \| in the output. A pipe that already has a backslash in front of it is left as it is, so pasting a Markdown table back in doesn't add extra backslashes.

How does column alignment work in Markdown tables?

Alignment is set by the row of dashes under the header. :--- aligns a column left, :---: centers it, ---: aligns it right, and plain --- leaves it to the app showing the table, which is usually left. You can set each column separately or use Set all. With Line up the columns on, the cells are also padded so the raw Markdown reads like a table.

Can I reformat a Markdown table I already have?

Yes. Paste the Markdown table and it is read back into rows, with its alignment row kept. From there you can line the columns up, change the alignment, swap rows and columns, or load it into the grid to edit cells, add rows or add columns.

What happens to line breaks inside a cell?

Markdown table rows have to sit on one line, so a line break inside a cell is written as <br>, which GitHub and most Markdown apps show as a new line within the cell. Empty cells are kept, and rows with fewer cells than the others are filled out with empty cells so every row has the same number of columns.

Why use a Markdown table when giving data to ChatGPT or Claude?

A Markdown table keeps rows and columns clearly labeled in plain text, with the header right above the values, so the structure of your data comes across cleanly when you paste it into a chat or add it to a knowledge file. It is also compact and easy for you to read and edit before you send it.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. The table is built inside your browser tab, and files you open are read on your device. Your data stays on your device and is never sent to our servers or anyone else's, so it is fine for private spreadsheets.
