How it works

   One file or a whole batch, of any type: PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, slides, images, ebooks or text.

   Your browser measures them

   Each file's size and type are read locally. For PDF, Word, EPUB, HTML, Markdown, CSV and text files, the text is extracted and its tokens counted, with page counts for PDFs.

   Compare with the published limits

   See your files next to the limits listed on the official ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini help pages: size per file, files per chat, project or GPT, PDF pages and context windows.

What the checker compares

Per-file limits are checked against each file, using the limit for its type: for ChatGPT, documents, spreadsheets and images have different listed sizes, and for Gemini, videos have a higher limit than other files. File-count limits are checked against the number of files you dropped. Context windows are compared with the total tokens across all files with extracted text.

Each check shows one of three results: within the listed limit, close to the listed limit (over 90%), or over the listed limit. Checks that don't apply to your files, such as PDF pages when there are no PDFs, are marked not applicable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the file size limit for ChatGPT?

OpenAI's help page lists 512 MB per file for documents and presentations, approximately 50 MB for CSV files and spreadsheets (depending on the size of each row), and 20 MB per image. Text and document files are also capped at 2 million tokens per file. These figures were checked on Oct 23, 2026.

How many files can I upload to Claude?

Anthropic's help page lists up to 20 files per chat, each up to 500 MB, with PDFs up to 1,000 pages. Project files can be up to 30 MB each; the number of project files is unlimited, but total content must fit within the context window. These figures were checked on Oct 23, 2026.

What are the Gemini file upload limits?

Google's help page for Gemini Apps lists up to 10 files per prompt, videos up to 2 GB, and all other supported file types up to 100 MB. ZIP files can hold up to 10 files and 100 MB. The context window is 32k tokens without an AI plan, 128k with AI Plus, and 1 million with AI Pro and AI Ultra (checked Oct 23, 2026).

How accurate are the token counts?

They are approximate. The OpenAI count is exact for the text this page extracts, using the o200k_base tokenizer. The Claude count is an estimate based on Anthropic's rule of thumb of about 4 characters per token, plus about 30% for Claude Opus 4.7 and later. Each service extracts and counts text in its own way, so its count may differ.

Why does a file show tokens: n/a?

Tokens are counted only for files whose text this page can extract in your browser: PDF, Word .docx, EPUB, HTML, Markdown, CSV, TSV, JSON and plain text, up to 50 MB each. Images, spreadsheets in Excel format, slides, audio, video and other files still get their size and type checked. A PDF made of scanned page images has no text layer to count.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Files are measured and read inside your browser tab, and nothing is sent to our servers or anyone else's. The page loads its text readers and tokenizer the first time you drop a file, but your files stay on your device the whole time.

Do these limits change?

Yes. Limits change and vary by plan and workspace, and OpenAI notes that it may lower upload rates during peak hours. The figures on this page come from the linked official help pages as of Oct 23, 2026. Check the source link for the current figure before relying on it.
